After Gerard van Honthorst (Dutch, 1592-1656) The Liberation of St. Peter Unsigned. Oil on copper, 7 1/8 x 12 1/4 in. (18.3 x 31.2 cm), unframed. Condition: Scattered small paint losses, fine craquelure, frame abrasions. N.B. The original work by van Honthorst is in the collection of the Berlin State Museums (oil on canvas, 51 1/2 x 71 inches). It was painted in 1616-18 for art connoisseur and collector Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani, who was a great admirer of Caravaggio. Honthorst had studied in Rome, and his depiction of St. Peter being freed from prison clearly showed Caravaggio's influence. The work by van Honthorst was exceptionally well regarded by contemporary audiences, and thus was the subject of numerous replicas and copies.
