John Linnell (British, 1792–1882) River Scene Signed and dated "John Linnell 1842" l. l., identified on a handwritten label affixed to the reverse. Oil on panel, 9 x 13 5/8 in. (22.5 x 35.0 cm), framed. Condition: Crack with minor surface loss to u.l. corner, minor paint losses, craquelure, varnish discoloration, surface grime. Estimate $400-600 There are several other miscellaneous inscriptions on the back of the frame and on brown paper tape on the perimeter of the back of the panel. They identify the artist, and include "teacher of William Blake" and "bought at Robinson's sale of Mrs. H.G. Le Roy's pictures, September 1954." Also inscribed "Cleaned with soap & wter August 1962."
