Five-piece Tiffany Studios Chinese Pattern Desk Set and a Plate, New York, early 20th century, desk set with decorated with cloud bands and shou characters, comprised of a pair of blotter holders, unmarked, 19 1/4 x 2 1/4; a perpetual calendar, marked "Tiffany Studios New York 1860," 6 x 7 1/2; a pen holder, marked "Tiffany Studios New York 2119," 4 3/4 x 7 1/2; a rocking blotter, marked "Tiffany Studios New York 1760," 3 x 5 3/4; and a patinated bronze plate, marked "Tiffany Studios New York 1612A," dia. 10 in. Provenance: The estate of Lois Smiley. Smiley was born in New York, where she eventually studied with Rufino Tamayo and Vaclav Vytlacil. Her artwork followed in their traditions of abstract expressionism with a focus on figural and landscape painting. She taught drawing and painting in New York and later in the Boston area. Over her lifetime, Smiley amassed a collection of important modern decorative arts including Tiffany glass, Wegner, and Nakashima furniture, much of which is included in this sale.
