Continental School, 19th Century Copy of Raphael's La Sacra Familia Inscribed and signed "La Sacra Familia/"LA PERLA"/-RAFAEL-/-copia-/... ontoro" l.r. Oil on canvas, 50 7/8 x 40 3/16 in. (129.2 x 102.2 cm), framed. Condition: Paint losses (including one affecting the beginning of the signature), craquelure, abrasions, canvas deformation to upper corners, surface grime. N.B. The composition of the original La Perla (1518-1520) was designed by Raphael but part of the execution was delegated to his pupil Giulio Romano. It depicted the Madonna and Child with the infant John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth, and, in the background, St. Joseph. Now in the collection of the Prado, the work was originally painted for Ludovico Canossa, and it eventually entered the collection of Philip IV of Spain who gave it its colloquial title, "La Perla." Estimate $700-900 Horizontal craquelure suggests that the painting was rolled at one time. Framed dimensions are 57 x 46 1/4 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
