Samuel Lancaster Gerry (American, 1813-1891) The Ride of Paul Revere Signed "S L Gerry. " l.r., inscribed by a later hand with alternative title "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" on the frame. Oil on canvas, 27 x 22 in. (68.6 x 55.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined onto a new stretcher, small loss to c.l. edge, minor retouch, craquelure. Estimate $800-1,200 The lining is relatively new and is adhered with glue or resin. There is retouch to the sky, and to a tear or repair near the upper right corner, as well as to a puncture just under 2 inches in diameter at the base of the falls lower right. The varnish, though recently cleaned, is thick and inconsistent, and the area around the signature was left untouched. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
