The Captain Samuel Cook Mahogany Veneer Liquor Chest and Six Gilt-decorated Blown Glass Bottles, England or America, early 19th century, the top with curved front hinged above a fitted interior housing six bottles and one small stemmed glass, all with gilt decoration, overall ht. 9 3/4 in., together with two carte-de-visites, one of Captain Cook, the other of Caroline (Chittenden) Cook. Provenance: Passed from the family of Captain Samuel Cook to the Chittenden family after Captain Cook's death in 1876. Note: Captain Samuel Cook began his career at sea in 1798 at the age of 14, and according to a note accompanying this "grog chest," "his life afloat was uniformly successful." Estimate $800-1,200 one botte broken, one glass missing. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
