Francesco Bartolozzi (Italian, 1727-1815) Three Framed Etchings After Works by Guercino. Signed in the plates "F. Bartolozzi Sculp." l.r. and "Guercino inv." l.l. Etchings on paper, image sizes to 11 x 7 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Subtle toning and mat burn, one with staining, not examined out of frames. N.B. A note on the frame backing of each print states that they were reproduced in two books edited by Arthur M. Hind, including Great engravers. A series of reproductions of the great masters (published in 1911) and Bartolozzi and other stipple engravers working in England at the end of the 18th century (published in 1912). Francesco Bartolozzi had access to a great many of Guercino's works held by the artist's heirs and by the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. He engraved a number of prints after drawings by Guercino and other masters in the Royal Collection, which were re-published in folio by John and Josiah Boydell in the 1790s. The British Museum notes on their website that the subject of Crying Man appeared in Boydells' Eighty-two prints, engraved by F. Bartolozzi &c. from the original drawings of Guercino, in the collection of his Majesty. Estimate $150-250 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
