American School, 19th Century A Tulip Garden. Signed "E.E. Reed" l.r. Oil on canvas (stretched with Boston tabs), 14 x 40 in., in a period frame. Condition: Two small punctures, scattered paint losses, craquelure, varnish discoloration, surface grime. N.B. It is tempting to attribute this painting to Ethel Reed (b. 1876), the noted designer of posters, who studied with Laura Coombs Hills and was active in Boston in the last decade of the 19th century. From 1895 to 1897 Reed designed important book posters and produced illustrations, covers, and endpapers. Unfortunately, no comparable oil paintings nor examples of a matching signature with the double "E" initials could be located. The artist essentially disappeared after 1897, when she departed Boston for England and Ireland. Estimate $200-400 Framed dimensions 14 x 44 inches. Stretcher with a label from Chas. J. Edmands, 12 Bromfield Street, Boston. This artist's materials supplier was at this address from 1884-1894. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
