Knapsack Identified to Private John Daly, Company H, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, c. 1861-64, tarred canvas knapsack painted on the front flap "23D. REGT./MASS. V./JNO DALY," (one closure strap detached but with the pack), painted on the left side "CO. H" and on the right "NO. 32," with leather tabs on the top for a rolled blanket, leather shoulder straps with brass fittings, and a folder with copies of his service and pension records, ht. 14, wd. 16 in. Provenance: The collection of Ron Tunison. Note: John Daly was an 18-year-old farmer from Harvard, Massachusetts, when he enlisted on October 2, 1861. He was mustered out of service on October 13, 1864. Estimate $800-1,200 Stenciling is a little dark but in overall very good condition considering its age.
