Confederate Gardner Pattern Canteen Captured by Charles Hudson, 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, c. 1862, cedar with iron staves and strap keepers, written on one side with light pencil "Rebel canteen taken at St. Charles, Arkansas by Charles Hudson on the 10th of January 1863," with "BM" carved on the same side, the other side of the canteen marked "Laura Hudson Whitewater, Walworth Co. Wisconsin from C. Hudson," with a replaced corn cob stopper and part of a leather strap and buckle, dia. 7, dp. 2 1/4 in. Provenance: The collection of Ron Tunison. Note: Hudson was from Whitewater, Wisconsin, and enlisted as a musician in company D, 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. His unit was detached and captured St. Charles, Arkansas. Estimate $1,000-1,200 Canteen has some wear from use and part of the leather strap remaining but in overall good condition. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
