Confederate Colonel George Washington Rain's Chest, c. 1861-65, poplar with dovetailed corners, applied top and base molding, lid with applied edge molding, recessed iron handles, and the front is marked "Col. Rain's/Augusta," overall ht. 19 3/8, wd. 21 1/4, lg. 33 1/4 in. Provenance: Purchased from the Rains family at an estate sale in Newburgh, New York, 40 years ago. Note: George graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. He served in the Mexican War and settled in Newburgh, New York, working with the Washington & Highland Iron Works. When the Civil War broke out he joined the Confederate army and in 1862 moved to Augusta, Georgia, and established the Confederate Powder Works. After the war he remained in Augusta but moved back to Newburgh in 1894 and passed away in 1898. Estimate $1,000-1,500 Has some wear from use but in overall good condition.
