Shell Guard Cutlass, c. 18th century, one-piece iron hilt with a single-shell guard with incised lines, bone grip, iron blade with double fullers, blade lg. 24, overall lg. 28 1/4 in. Provenance: Rodney Hilton Brown Collection; The War Museum. Note: Similar examples have been found on the East Coast of North America from Maine to the Caribbean. It is similar in every respect to Drawing 14 on p. 77 of Gilkerson's BOARDERS AWAY, Vol. I; to Plates 364S & 365S in George Neumann's SWORDS and BLADES of the AMERICAN REVOLUTION; and to Plate 83e in AMERICAN SWORDS FROM THE MEDICUS COLLECTION, by Norm Flayderman.
