Colonel Samuel Thaxter Gold and Enamel Mourning Ring, America, c. 1740, the gold ring with with coffin shaped stone and tiny pen and ink image of a skeleton behind, flanked by single smaller stones, the exterior of the band with black enamel and gilt lettering "S:THAXTER ESQ:O.B. 13:NOV 1740:AE:76," dia. 13/16 in. Provenance: By direct descent from Benjamin Lincoln to the consignor, Hingham, Massachusetts. Note: Colonel Samuel Thaxter (1665-1740) was a prominent citizen of Hingham, Massachusetts, being a member of the commission that settled the boundary between Massachusetts and Rhode Island in 1719, and commander of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1728.
