Rufus Porter Attributed Paint-decorated Box, Thurmnat, Maryland, area, c. 1820, the front and sides with a scene of white buildings with red roofs in a hilly landscape with tall trees, the worn hinged lid opening to a well with a small till, molded base, ht. 10 3/8, wd. 16 1/2, dp. 12 5/8 in. Provenance: Collection of Mr. & Mrs. John Thayer; Robert Thayer. According to Robert Thayer, the damage to the top occurred when the previous owners' daughter sat on the box. At the time, it was being used as a toy chest for the family children. Note: Rufus Porter traveled southward between 1819 and 1820, painting portraits from Boston through New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, and Virginia. The decorative motif on the box is very similar to the style used by Porter on his documented painted walls in New England.
