Paint-decorated Tulip Poplar Blanket Chest, Washington County, Pennsylvania, early 19th century, the molded hinged top with a panel of painted "rays of the sun" surrounded by graining, the facade with a "pine tree" pattern composed of a tree trunk issuing stylized sponge-applied green and burnt sienna branches and "pine cones," the pattern repeating on the sides, all on bracket feet, original surface, ht. 23 1/2, wd. 42 3/4, dp. 19 in. Provenance: A note reading "this chest belonged to Andrew Sonnendecker, my grandfather... Gail Williamson." accompanies the chest.
