Young "Burt's Solar Compass," Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, c. 1840, early original lacquered instrument, horizontal circle engraved in four quadrants reading 0-90 and read by opposed verniers to single minutes, blued-steel needle, scale calibrated 10-0-10, and stamped "3323," arms engraved "Wm. J Young/maker/Philadelphia" and "Burt's Patent," inlaid silver declination arc calibrated 0-25 reading to single minutes by vernier, dual spirit levels, graduated and tapered sighting vanes, with its original fitted box.
