Rare Lebbeus Dod Brass Protractor and Parallel Rule, Mendham, New Jersey, late 18th century, engraved brass instrument with protractor divided in 10 degrees 10-90-10, spring-fitted knife-edge arm, signed "L. Dod Mendham" on bottom section, and mounted to the upper portion of the stationary arm of the parallel rules that have S-shaped hinges connecting the lower knife-edge rule, overall lg. 12 in. Note: Credited with the invention of the parallel rule protractor, Lebbeus Dod (1739-1816) was a manufacturer of mathematical instruments in New Jersey. Also known for making muskets, he served as a captain of artillery during the Revolutionary War. His three sons, Stephen, Abner, and Daniel, were also mathematical instrument and clock makers.
