Italian School, 17th/18th Century A Procession of Biblical Personages Unsigned, with an unidentified collector's stamp recto l. r. and l.c. on the reverse, inscribed "Francesco Bassano" on a presentation plaque, inscribed "Bassano?" on the mat, inscribed "Rachel H. Wade" in pencil on the frame backing. Counterproof with red chalk on laid paper with watermark of an anchor in a circle below a six-pointed star, 13 3/8 x 8 1/4 in. (34.0 x 21.0 cm), framed. Condition: Repair to l.l. corner, small hole to u.c., nicks and wear to edges, creasing as if folded, ink spots. N.B. The drawing is judged to be a counterproof due to the flat uniformity of the chalk and the left leaning slant of the lines. The unusual assemblage of Biblical figures with the empty cartouche below suggest that this might have been designed as a frontispiece for a collection of Bible stories. Current scholarship does not support the attribution to Francesco Bassano. Estimate $600-800 The watermark is similar to those on mid- 16th century Italian papers or papers fram Prague..
