Charles Landseer (British, 1799-1879) The Approval of the Matriarch Signed "Charles Landseer. 1847." l.l. Oil on panel, 32 x 37 3/4 in. (81.3 x 95.9 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure, scattered minor paint losses, varnish discoloration. Estimate $800-1,200 Framed dimensions are 40 x 46 1/4 x 3 inches. Retouch primarily to the background (and not in the faces of the figures), with some brushwork to reinforce the folds of the clothing of the matriarch and the man on the far left, the edge of the folding screen on the right, and one small dot in the young woman's dress probably to cover a paint loss. There is retouch to the hair of both of the male figures. Scattered paint losses are small but noticeable for their contrast against the dark background. The paint losses are found mostly in the upper left quadrant, also near the chandelier, and scattered in the lower right corner. There is also a 3/16 inch loss appearing as a dot in the young woman's dress in the lower right of her skirt. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
