Nicholas Vasilieff (American/Russian, 1892-1970) Farmer and Barn Signed "N. Vasilieff" l.r., inscribed "Landscape with Yellow Barn 1952" and "1760 UConn Museum" on the stretcher, titled on a label from the William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticutt affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 28 x 36 in. (71.1 x 91.4 cm), framed. Condition: Wax lined, craquelure, small scattered accretions. Provenance: Purchased from the artist in 1969 by the current owner. Estimate $1,000-1,500 Sky with areas of uneven pigment and surface imperfections which appear to be original to the composition. Under UV light the sky shows some fluorescence which might be broadly brushed retouch or perhaps a newer coat of varnish. Stable vertical craquelure, more prominent in the plowed field. Possible retouch or extra varnish surrounding the figure of the farmer. Minor surface grime. Framed dimensions are 34 1/2 x 42 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches.
