Favre-Leuba "Bivouac" Reference 53213 Wristwatch with Matterhorn Ascent Provenance, c. 1962, Bakelite bidirectional rotating bezel with calibrated scale to 3,000 meters, silvered dial with applied indices, subsidiary seconds and outer millibars scale, and vivid red scale hand, signed crown, screw-back case marked "Bivouac/Altimeter/Barometer/53213," on the original steel bracelet marked on clasp "NSA," dia. 40 mm. Provenance: On July 28th, 1969, Charles Malfetti summited the Matterhorn while wearing this watch. There is an accompanying Western Union Telegram reading "Charles Malfetti Reached The Top Of The Matterhorn T=7:10 AM Aug 28, 1969." Framed images of the signed and dated ascension card with Mr. Malfetti along with his guides' signatures, Western Union Telegram, and five photographs of the trek accompany the lot. Note: The Bivouac was introduced in 1962 and was the first mechanical wristwatch with an aneroid barometer to be offered on the market.
