Large 4-inch James Short Reflecting Library Telescope, London, mid-18th century, the 24-in. lacquered brass main tube engraved on ocular collar "James Short/London 245/1296=18," the ellipsoid mirror attached by an interior arm that connects to the focusing screw at the eyepiece end, finders scope, all mounted to a scroll-foot tripod with an altazimuth mount and horizontal hand-turned worm gear drive adjustment. Provenance: John T. Rule, professor of graphics and Dean of Students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Four of professor Rule's books on graphics accompany the lot. Estimate $2,000-3,000 mounting bracket screws are 20th century, secondary mirror is off and chipped but present, primary mirror has two cracks but all is present and attached to scope body, adjusting knobs function on mounting bracket, finderscope still shows the cross hairs.
