Continental School, 17th/18th Century Study of Male Figures. Inscribed indistinctly "B..." l.l., inscribed "...di Angelo Bancheri," "Ecole F...," and "très beau dessin ancien/études d'hommes" in pencil in various hands on the reverse. Pencil on paper, 6 11/16 x 9 1/4 in., unmatted, unframed. Condition: Creasing, toning, soiling, pale staining, foxing, remnants of former mountings on the reverse. Provenance: The collection of Professor and Mrs. Jonathan Brown, Princeton. Estimate $300-500 The creasing on this work seems to have occurred in the original papermaking, rather than any mis-handling. The drawing marks skim over the tops of the ridges, suggesting the creases predate the drawing itself. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
