John Haelen (American, act. 1920-1930) Illustration for For Ten Thousand Dollars. Signed and dated "Haelen [within an oval] 26" l.r., titled and inscribed "#3.../JOHN MONK SAUNDERS/HAELEN/1947 B'WAY/PLEASE/RETURN" on the reverse, identified on an unattributed label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in., unframed. Condition: Two sets of parallel tears to u.c., craquelure, varnish discoloration, surface grime. N.B. The story For Ten Thousand Dollars by John Monk Saunders was published in Liberty magazine, vol. 3, #17, August 28, 1926. The label referenced above provided the full caption for the illustration, "He wrote formal letters to her and in the course of things she sent him a snap-shot of herself in beach costume at the Lido in Venice."
