Rex Jesse Ashlock (American, 1918-1999) Two Grisaille Paintings on Paper: The Oracle and Stele. The Oracle (Song without Words) signed and dated "Rex/60" l.l., titled and numbered "...31P" on the backing sheet; Stele dated and signed "31 Mar 62/Rex" u.l., titled and numbered "...30P" on the backing sheet. Gouache on paper, each 26 x 19 7/8 in., matted, unframed. Condition: Both with tack holes to the corners, Stele with glue stains to the reverse, Oracle with toning and probable glue staining to the reverse. Estimate $600-800 The works are presented in matboard backings and clear plastic fronts, joined around the edges with masking tape. Both works were glued to the backing matboards. "Stele" has come loose from the backing board, and its plastic covering is ripped and crinkled. It appears that "The Oracle" has also come loose from the backing, but the plastic front is intact, and the mat was not opened to examine the work further.
