China Trade School, Early 20th Century Portrait of the Barque Eclipse Unsigned, the ship identified on the bow and a pennant. Oil on fine linen, 26 x 34 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Imperfections around edge, oval imperfection in water, linen very slightly loose from stretcher at top. Note: The Eclipse was built by A Rodger & Co. in 1902, in Port Glasgow. She was owned by Anglo American Oil Company, LTD. Anglo American Oil was started in 1888, and was based in London; it was the first foreign affiliate of the J. D. Rockefeller Trust. The company later became part of the American company known as ESSO. This explains why she is flying the American flag from her foremast.
