Liverpool Transfer-decorated Creamware Jug, England late 18th/early 19th century, depicting an image of George Washington within a frame of stars and state names on one side, the other with a depiction of the sailing ship MERCUREY [sic], the front inscribed "MARY CLARK" within a wreath above a spreadwing eagle, ht. 9 1/2 in. Provenance: Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, the Richards Collection. Literature: This lot, and others from the same collection, are illustrated and contextualized in Imagining Ichabod: My Journey Into 18th-Century America Through History, Food, and a Georgian House, by Paula Bennett, Bauer and Dean: New York, 2016. Imagining Ichabod is described as a "warm, personal account of life in an eighteenth-century house and the search for its first inhabitants... [which offers] a fascinating glimpse into [the United States'] colonial period and its years as a fledgling republic." Estimate $800-1,200 no evidence of chips, cracks, or repair; very slight craquelure to glaze; glaze imperfections to rim and small imperfection to body - all in the making.
