Charles Porter Brown (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, 1855-1920) The Barque Taria Topan of Salem Signed and dated "C. P. Brown/1878" l.r. Oil on tin, 12 x 18 1/2 in., in a molded gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Soiling, small crack at l.r. corner. Note: The Taria Topan sailed from Boston August 2, 1877 for a market in Zanzibar then arrived in Boston on April 26, 1878. Charles Porter Brown was a passenger on this voyage and made several sketches of business places visited in Zanzibar (The Essex Institute Historical Collections, Vol. LX, 1924, p. 30).
