Inlaid Maple and Tiger Maple Chest of Four Drawers, Southeastern New Hampshire, possibly Hampstead, c. 1817, the top with a checker-banded edge above a crossbanded case of four cockbeaded and similarly crossbanded tiger maple veneer drawers, all on shaped apron joining French feet and centering a tiger maple panel surrounded by checkered banding, refinished, replaced brasses, ht. 38, wd. 38 1/2, dp. 18 in. Note: The interior of the backboard of the second drawer from the bottom bears a pencil inscription: "Dean Hampstead May 11 1817," which likely refers to an unknown cabinetmaker named Dean in Hampstead, New Hampshire, which is about 20 miles from the coast. Estimate $3,000-5,000 rear supports likely replaced and (but feet appear fine), veneer patching and minor losses to crossbanding on drawerfronts, top inlaid along front edge only, lock missing in top drawer. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
