Art Nouveau 18kt Gold, Opal, Diamond, and Enamel Pendant/Brooch, Lucien Gautrait, c. 1900, designed as a peacock with opal cabochon and plique-a-jour enamel plumage, highlighted by rose- and old European-cut diamonds and emeralds, suspending an opal and diamond drop, removable brooch fitting, lg. 2 3/4 in., French guarantee stamps, maker's mark. Note: A nearly identical example is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The museum purchased it at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais in 1901. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from Dr. Viola Wertheim Bernard (1907-1998) in 1981. Dr. Bernard was the daughter of Jacob Wertheim, founder of the United Cigar Company. She became a prominent New York psychiatrist who won international recognition for her work in child psychiatry.
