John and Ann Donnell Sterling Silver Tray, John Crouch I & Thomas Hannam, London, England, 1798, round form with gadrooned rim and feet, engraved foliated border, center with engraved monogram "JAD" inside a wreath, dia. 11 1/4 in., approx. 25.1 troy oz. Provenance: John Donnell (1754-1827) settled in Baltimore shortly after the American Revolution. He and his wife, Ann Teackle Smith Donnell (1781-1858), enjoyed success as prominent shipping merchants. John served as president of the Bank of the United States, Baltimore. "Willow Brook" (1799), their twenty-six-acre Baltimore country estate, was adorned with elaborate gardens. They were members of the Baltimore Dancing Assembly and were stockholders of the Library Company. The present owner purchased the tray from direct descendants of the Donnells.
