Black-painted Vase-back Armchair, possibly Long Island or Hudson River Valley, New York, mid-18th century, with serpentine crest, shaped arms with scrolled handholds, and turned front legs ending in pad feet, (imperfections), ht. 44 1/4, seat ht. 18 in. Estimate $400-600 evidence of minor old insect activity, splat broken out and horizontal shoe with patch, rush seat replaced, one carved boss on outside of handhold missing, similar reddish brown stain evident under black paint on splat and chair.
