Joseph Eliot's Cheese Box Canteen, c. 1776, cheese box-style canteen with pine sides, carved on one side with "IOSEPh/ELIOT/1776," one iron wire cord loop remaining on the side, dia. 7 3/8, wd. 2 3/4 in. Provenance: By family descent to the consignor. Note: Joseph Eliot (or Elliot) marched on the Lexington alarm, Siege of Boston, New York Campaigns of 1776, and fought at the Battle of Saratoga. He became sick and was sent home on furlough where he died not long after, on December 15th, 1777. His canteen is listed as being owned in 1908 by his descendant, Charles Darwin Elliot. It was sold to the family of the consignor after C.D. Elliot died. Estimate $3,000-5,000 Missing some of the original rose head nails but in overall very good condition.
