Attributed to Charles Henry Gifford (American, 1839-1904) Niagara Falls Unsigned, with a label from A. B. Crowell, New Bedford, Massachusetts, affixed to the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 9 x 14 in. (23.0 x 35.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, minor dots of retouch to sky, fine craquelure. Estimate $3,000-5,000 Frame dimensions are 13 7/8 x 18 7/8 in. In an envelope that accompanies the painting is a February 27, 1987, article from Antiques & The Arts Weekly that describes the exhibition "An American Luminist: Charles Henry Gifford" at The Katonah Gallery, curated by John I.H. Baur. The exhibition had been presented earlier at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. A larger but similar view of Niagara Falls, dated 1873 and with Gifford's signature lower left, was sold September 24, 2011, at Keno auctions.
