After Francesco Albani (Italian, 1578-1660) The Element of Air Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 x 26 1/8 in. (51.0 x 66.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, areas of skinning, fine craquelure. N.B. This painting by an unknown copyist is likely based upon the engraving by Étienne Baudet (French, 1636-1711) after Francesco Albani's original painting, because the composition is reversed from the original. Albani's original was part of a series depicting the four elements. The composition in this instance has been cropped at the bottom. The complete painting and subsequent engraving included Juno in her chariot drawn by two peacocks, surrounded by putti, with her messenger, Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow, above, and Aeolus in the lower right corner opening a wooden door to the cave of the winds.
