$277
British School, Late 19th Century Still Life with Oranges and Grapes. Signed "F. Mutrie" l.l., with a Winsor & Newton canvas stencil on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 8 x 12 in., framed. Condition: Fine craquelure, surface grime. N.B. There are two sisters with the surname Mutrie listed as still life painters in 19th-century Britain, Annie Feray Mutrie and Martha Darlay Mutrie. From the few examples of the sisters' signatures that are available, the former tended to sign with her initials "AFM," and the latter signed with her first two initials and last name. Since the signature on the painting at hand did not correspond to either sister, nor did it appear that there was another initial before the "F.," the painting has been cataloged as British School.
