Set of Eight Federal Carved Mahogany Shield-back Dining Chairs, Salem or Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1800, the backs composed of intersecting ribs with acanthus and bellflower carving terminating at a carved quarter-fan foliate design on a punched ground, overupholstered seats joining square tapering legs, refinished, (imperfections), ht. 38, seat ht. 18 1/2 in. Provenance: The estate of Bruce A. Buxton, Portland, Maine. Estimate $3,000-5,000 losses to some carved elements - one gone entirely, minor shrinkage cracks, small separations, evidence (screws) of old repairs to one rear seat rail.
