Frances Fox Lancasterian School Needlework Sampler, England, 1838, stitched in red silk thread on a linen background, five lines of alphabet and numbers, signed "Frances Fox/Aged 9 Years/Lancasterian School" above verse "Think of the Negro Mother when/Her Child is torn away/Sold for a litle slave Oh Then/For that Poor Mother Pray," ht. 8, wd. 7 1/4 in. Note: The Lancasterian system of education was founded by Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838) in England in the late 18th century. The system relied upon a single schoolmaster to teach a select group of pupils referred to as Monitors to then use their knowledge to teach the rest of the students. During Lancaster's lifetime, he formed at least fifty such schools across England. According to genealogical information, Hannah Fox was baptized in Gloucester, England, October 18, 1829, and died in 1869.
