French School, third quarter 19th century. "Farmers By The River" - 1869, oil on canvas, signed lower center "C. Sastelle 1869". Painting depicts a mountain side village at center with figures sowing the land just in front of a river beside a tall pair of trees, at left a woman walks away from the viewer toward the village with a basket under her arm, the village having buildings of white stucco with thatch rooves, behind the village a castle rises up on a tall hill backed by a mountain. Framed approximately 24.25" x 21.25", unframed approximately 21" x 18".
