Penry, John (1559-1593) A Briefe Discovery of the Untruthes and Slanders (Against the True Government of the Church of Christ). [Edinburgh: Robert Waldegrave, 1590]. First and only edition in ESTC, quarto, later boards, some side notes and catchwords shaved, 6 7/8 x 5 in. In this tract, the Puritan martyr John Penry defends the Scottish Presbyterians against accusations of disloyalty made by Richard Bancroft, future Archbishop of Canterbury, in a sermon of 1589. It was published anonymously in Edinburgh by Robert Waldegrave, who had sought exile to escape persecution in England. Penry himself was later hanged for treason, at the age of thirty, on his return to London in 1593.
