Audubon, John James (1785-1851) Prints from The Birds of North America , Octavo Edition, Approximately 404 Color Lithographs. A collection of more than 400 lithographic plates, all likely removed from different copies of the first edition, c. 1840-1844 (without colored backgrounds), housed in five three-ring binders, with sixteen plates in duplicate. This large group of octavo bird prints includes three of Audubon's mystery birds, specimens either confusedly depicted, subsequently rendered extinct, or otherwise unknown in natural history, including the Blue Mountain Warbler (plate 98), Cuvier's Kinglet (131), and Townsend's Bunting (157).
