Triomphe de l'Église , Engraved by Gérard Edelinck (1640-1707) after Charles Le Brun (1619-1690). [Paris, c. 1686]. Two very large double-folio sheets joined horizontally to form a monumental engraved image, hand-colored, some loss of color where the sheets join, matted and framed, 42 x 29 1/2 in. sight This large allegorical image includes a portrait of Louis XIV of France (1638-1715) on a shield held by a figure representing Roman Catholicism, riding on a carriage being pulled by the symbols of the four evangelists; in the bottom panel is a large terrestrial globe depicting Europe, Africa, and Asia, with a personification of Truth on the left, and monsters falling into the abyss on the right. The image is alternately titled Extirpation du Calvinisme , and L'Église Victorieuse de l'Hérésie.
