Bible, Book of Common Prayer, Old and New Testament in English. The Bible, Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke. London: Deputies of Christopher Barker, printer to the Queenes most excellent Majestie, 1594. Geneva translation of the so-called "Breeches" Bible (with the text in Genesis chapter three, verse seven referring to the clothes fashioned by Adam and Eve as "breeches,") in quarto, with three separate title pages each printed within the same woodcut border (title to the Book of Common Prayer printed in red and black), some 18th century inscriptions, later binding, boards detached, 8 1/4 x 6 1/8 in. William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale's translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into English was the first complete English version of the Old Testament rendered from these sources. Originally published in 1560, it was affordable and popular, and reprinted many times. Its leanings are Calvinist and Puritan, giving rise to rival English versions that were in print during the same period, including the King James and Douay-Rheims translations.
