Monroe, James (1758-1831) Autograph Letter, Undated. Wove watermarked bifolium, inscribed over one page, with conjugate inscribed with addressee's name attached. To Richard Smith, cashier, Washington, D.C. branch, Bank of the U.S., asking him to pay the claim of a Mr. Bibb [likely William Wyatt Bibb (1781-1820) whom Monroe appointed Governor of the newly formed Alabama Territory in 1817] and ordering another payment. The sheet softened and stained by mildew, fragmentary at corners, affecting a word or two; text bold and legible, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. "J. Monroe is very thankful to Mr. Smith for his kind intimation of this day refer him to the claim of Mr. Bibb, which much interesting business had driven from his memory. The sum appropriated to that demand is deposited in the bank of Columbia, and will I presume accounting to orders already given be applied to it. If Mr. Smith doubts it, J M will sign a check for it. Saturday Mr. Smith will oblige me by paying Mr. Varden for me one hundred & thirty dollars for which I shall give him an order."
