George Nakashima, 1959-1961, designed for Widdicomb Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, MI. One drawer with Widdicomb fabric label. Each rectangular top above a drawer with a brass knob, over an open compartment, on shaped walnut angled legs, in the original walnut oil finish. Height 22”. Width 21”. Depth 21”. (Cond: good) (3000/5000) Purchased by the consignor directly from Widdicomb in 1960. Cf. Nakashima chose the term “Sundra”, as used in the offered five lots (91, 92, 93, 94, 95) of Nakashima furniture as well as for the line he designed for Widdicomb, from the Sanskrit word for “thing of beauty”. The introduction for the “Sundra” Collection in the Widdicomb catalog and applicable to the five offered Nakashima lots states, “there is a subtle elimination of straight lines; almost all pieces have edges that are beveled back ten degrees; many tops overhang substantially more than is usual...”.
