Provenance: from the estate of a prolific European collector who wishes to remain anonymous.Paul Gaugauin (France, 1848 -1903) was born in Paris of a Breton father (Clovis Gauguin) and a Peruvian Creole mother (Aline Chazel). Paul had no formal education of any kind beyond high school, joined the French Navy at the age of 14, and later distinguished himself in a banking house & brokerage firm. He became a professional painter in 1883 through his interest in the Impressionists, especially Pisarro. His friendship with Van Gogh was disastrous and inspirational concurrently, and ultimately led to his exit to Tahiti, where he felt he could better set his imagination free. He died in 1908, famous for his breadth of Post-Impressionistic paintings.
