Signed by Bryant on the free endpaper, "March, 1864" , with a small photograph of the elderly Bryant tipped in at page four. Above the Author's signature on the f.f.e.p., a pencilled note explains, "Presented to the Metropolitan Fair in aid of the Sanitary Commission by" William Cullen Bryant March 1864." Non-authorial presentation inscription to Elizabeth S. Woodruff on the verso of the free endpaper, in 1896; with her bookplate on the front pastedown. 8vo, publisher's brown cloth, blind ruled, tips of spine worn, corners bumped and rubbed; foxing throughout; photo of author is cockled and faded; lacks front flyleaf. The Metropolitan Fair was held in the Metropolitan City of New-York, 28th of March, 1864, for the relief of the sick and wounded of the Union Army. [ BAL 1683].
