First Edition. 8 woodcuts. 18mo, original embossed brown cloth. Head of spine worn; joint splitting. [Together with] Chronicles of Border Warfare, or A History of the Settlement by the Whites, of North-Western Virginia: And of the Indian Tribes and Massacres in that Section of the State Clarksburg, VA: Joseph Israel, 1831. First edition. 16mo, contemporary calf, lacks rear endpaper. Note: no list of subscribers (added later), and text begins a p. [ix] with the title-page, but no apparent loss of text. The author of THRILLING SKETCHES was not pleased with his experiences at West Point, the military academy, nor with his adventures in the field in The West and in Florida. However, the authorship has been attributed to an Englishman, Gordon-Miller. It has been listed in bibliographies as history, and as fiction. Of CHRONICLES, Field opined, "Of this scarce book, very few copies are complete or in good condition. Having been issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed principally for a local circulation, almost every copy was read by a country fire-side until scarcely legible. Most of the copies lack the table of contents. " [ Howes G257, q.v. H 471; Graff 1594; Wright I: 2105 ] [ Howes W601; Field 1690]
