The Great Mississippi Steamboat Race: from New Orleans to St. Louis, July 1870. New York, c. 1870. Lithograph with hand-coloring. Framed and matted. This work depicts an 1870 race between the two steamboats Natchez VI and Robert E. Lee. The Robert E. Lee won the race, arriving in St. Louis on July 4. Currier and Ives published two different variations on this race. This earlier version depicts the two steamboats on the river at midnight with a caption on the bottom stating that the R. E. Lee won the race in three days, eighteen hours and fourteen minutes. Sight: 10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches.
