early 20th century having a serpentine handle terminating in a mask, the body painted with a continuous scene depicting soldiers on horseback and on foot flanking a monarch, decorated throughout with bands of mythical creatures and raised on a domed circular foot, the underside bearing a bird glyph and numbered 3 in underglaze blue. Height 14 1/2 inches. Provenance: By repute, purchased from the Estate of U.S. Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch (1808-1895), Fort Wayne, Indiana By family descent to the present owner In good, stable condition overall. Apparent area of repair to the end of the serpentine handle where it meets the mask; deposit of dust and grime to recesses of the same area. Instance of loss to the glaze where the handle meets the back of the spout. Pitting to the glaze throughout. Light shelf wear to the foot rim, as well as scattered minor chips and areas of surface loss to the glaze at the edge of the foot. A few, minor instances of surface loss to the glaze on the mask, particularly on the nose.
